[He'd dragged Church clear out the front door, shoving him back against the wall and slapping his other hand over his mouth.]

Shut. Up. If I let go of you and I hear one more smartassed remark bound to upset that girl, you will walk around with an imprint of the Ring of the Lucii on yor face for a week. Do you understand.

[There are a few sputtering words out of Church's mouth during the dragging and the shoving, and then, blessedly, there is silence. Church doesn't so much struggle as bring his hands up around Ardyn's arm on impulse.

He doesn't make much indication either way (y'know, on account of being shoved against a wall and having a hand over his mouth), but his glare doesn't lessen any.]

[Ardyn dropped his hand, glaring right back at him.]

What is wrong with you? Am I missing something I should know about?

What's wrong with me? The fuck's wrong with you? [He gives Ardyn a shove.] Get the hell off me, god, of course it goes over your head, you don't know shit about our pop culture, or mine or hers or whatever.

I don't give a damn about that right now, Church, are you that completely tactless?! Why did you have to start spouting asinine nonsense like that when it was only upsetting her?!

[Ardyn snarled that in the same gravel-laden voice that put even the Starscourge to shame, eyes flashing as he drove his fist into the wall half a foot from Church's head.]

[The voice is bad enough, worse that it's leveled at him. He's already ducking away before the fist makes any connection with the wall, practically scurrying aside, away from the building and away from Ardyn. Had he been a spirit, he would've abandoned his body entirely.

He doesn't immediately stop, either, stumbling several more steps away before he ever turns back to face Ardyn. The fear is still visible despite an attempt to shove it back down and away. He could give a reason or two, but they sound...very petty now. Even if they're somewhat valid.

In fact, Church doesn't stop at all, still walking backwards unsteadily, and throws up his hands.]

Okay! Forget this, you fucking win! Have fun with the rest of the episode! I'll be somewhere the hell out here!

[Ardyn scowled and threaded his other hand through his hair--fist dropping from the wall like he was just realizing where he was and what he was doing.]

Ch- [He swallowed hard against the frustration jammed harshly in his throat, not looking up at him.] ...Leonard. I'm sorry, I-...

I don't care how ridiculous you thought it was, that wasn't the time or place to underline the fact. She was upset enough, and I don't care if you dislike half this damnable house, you can keep your mouth shut long enough not to provoke someone when they're like that.

Okay, cool, awesome, go play surrogate dad to her, too; someone send Luscinia to find me when the episode's over or something! [...Is he ever going to stop moving away or--]

[Ardyn didn't answer; he knew that tone. He remembered it, distantly--like the way one remembered a dissonant melody that had once rung painfully through the streets of Insomnia. In a chorus of one word he didn't dare even think.]

[It was the note of someone that was afraid of him, and it hurt in a way he hadn't felt in two thousand years.]

[motherfucking_ghost]

I'm--I'm gonna go cool off-- [He makes a vague motion somewhere toward the garage of ships.] And you cool off, and someone needs to know what's happening on the show, aaaand we both just gotta let cooler heads prevail, right? Right. Cool.

[It takes another moment or two, because he's making sure Ardyn isn't about to warp after him, which would end very poorly for them both, before he finally turns around and starts earnestly heading for the garage.]
